Health insurance for Las Vegas event contractors: what the new Battle Born plans change
Short answer: Below the tax credit line, buying through Nevada Health Link is usually the low-cost move, and the credit applies to the new Battle Born plans just as it does to private ones. Above the line, every plan there is full price, Battle Born included, so healthy contractors should price a medically underwritten plan as well.
Between load-in and load-out? Answer a few questions about income and household, none about health, and Sam Jaber will tell you which of these fits your year. Or call 813-999-0101.
Check my options with Sam JaberYou work the convention and event business in Las Vegas on a 1099: audio and video, lighting, rigging, staging, exhibit installs, or running production for the companies that put the shows on. The work bunches up around the big shows and thins out between them, and no client pays toward your health coverage.
For 2026, Nevada changed the menu. Nevada Health Link, the state's own marketplace, added the Battle Born State Plans, a state-designed set of standardized plans sold beside the private ones. At the same time the average benchmark premium for a 40-year-old rose from $414 a month to $497, about 20%. Where you fit starts with one question: does your income this year qualify you for a tax credit on Nevada Health Link?
When show-season income still leaves you in the credit range
Nevadans buy marketplace coverage through Nevada Health Link rather than HealthCare.gov, and the federal tax credit works there the same way. If your expected income falls inside the credit range, a Nevada Health Link plan is usually what costs you the least, and the credit applies to the Battle Born plans and the private plans alike.
The hard part is the estimate. Income that arrives show by show is easy to misjudge, and when the return is filed any excess credit has to be paid back, without a cap from 2026 on. Build the number from bookings you actually have, and update Nevada Health Link when a big contract lands. In a truly lean year, Nevada Medicaid is open to adults earning up to 138% of the poverty level. How the subsidy cliff works explains the upper line.
Next step: turn a show calendar into an estimate. Sam Jaber can help you set a realistic income figure and choose among the Nevada Health Link plans that fit it. Or call 813-999-0101.
Build my estimate with Sam JaberWhen a strong show year takes you past the line
Help ends at four times the poverty guideline, which works out to roughly $63,840 for one person on 2027 coverage, chosen in open enrollment from November 1, and $62,600 on 2026 coverage. Earn past that and every Nevada Health Link plan bills you its full premium. Using that statewide average, the benchmark for a 40-year-old went up $83 a month, about $996 over the year, and all of it is yours to pay once you are above the line.
The $414 and $497 are statewide averages for one age. Your price depends on your age, county and household.
If you're looking at one of the Battle Born plans
Nevada's 2026 plan files, as published by CMS, list 29 Battle Born State Plans from three insurers, sold in all 16 counties and Carson City, at gold, silver and bronze levels. Every one of them is an HMO. The state's stated aim in creating them was more competition on its marketplace and premiums held down.
For an event contractor who works and lives in the Las Vegas valley, an HMO network may be all you need for routine care, so a Battle Born plan deserves a fair look next to the private plans. Compare them the same way: does the network include your doctors, does the drug list cover your prescriptions, and what is the price after any credit. Above the credit line, though, a Battle Born plan is still a full-price marketplace plan.
Next step: see where a Battle Born plan lands for you. Sam Jaber can line one up against the private plans and your other options. Or call 813-999-0101.
Compare a Battle Born plan with Sam JaberWhen you're healthy and above the line
A healthy contractor above the line can also price private plans sold outside Nevada Health Link that use medical underwriting. They look at your medical history first, and because only applicants who pass are covered, someone in good health may pay less than full marketplace price. Many run on PPO networks that reach beyond Nevada, which matters if you also work shows in Orlando, Chicago or other convention cities, since the CMS files list no PPO plan on Nevada Health Link.
- Expect health questions. What you disclose determines whether you are approved, turned down, or approved with an existing condition excluded.
- Compare price to price. Set the underwritten quote against the full Nevada Health Link price for the same household, Battle Born plans included.
- Read the benefit list. These plans set their own coverage. What medical underwriting means covers the process.
Next step: get both prices in front of you. Sam Jaber can quote an underwritten plan and set it against your full marketplace price, and the online form asks no health questions. Or call 813-999-0101.
Price an underwritten planIf a health condition decides it for you
Living with an ongoing condition or paying for a costly medication points you back to Nevada Health Link, Battle Born or private, even without a credit. Nothing sold there can refuse you or raise your rate over your health history. An underwritten plan can do both, and could leave out the very thing you need treated. Your choice then comes down to which plan includes your doctors and covers your prescriptions at the lowest total cost.
Next step: match a plan to your doctors. Sam Jaber can check which Nevada Health Link plans include your doctors and medications. Or call 813-999-0101.
Ask Sam Jaber about my doctorsWhen a staff job with a production company or venue is ending
Plenty of 1099 crews started on staff. The end of that job's plan gives you a 60-day special enrollment window on Nevada Health Link, and with a known last day you can generally sign up for the replacement in advance. A larger employer's plan generally falls under federal COBRA, and Nevada has its own continuation law for smaller employers with fewer than 20 workers. Either way you pay the full group premium. Our COBRA comparison helps you decide whether that beats the routes above.
Next step: be covered on your first day out on your own. Sam Jaber can compare continuation with your marketplace and underwritten options. Or call 813-999-0101.

Take my two-minute checkCommon questions
What are Nevada's Battle Born State Plans?
They are state-designed, standardized health plans that Nevada introduced for 2026 and sells through Nevada Health Link next to private plans. Plan files published by CMS list 29 of them from three insurers, sold statewide, and all of them use HMO networks.
Can I get a tax credit on a Battle Born plan?
Yes, if your income qualifies. Battle Born plans are sold through Nevada Health Link, and the federal premium tax credit applies to them the same way it applies to the private plans there. Above 400% of the poverty guideline there is no credit on any plan.
Do Battle Born plans cover me when I work a show out of state?
For emergencies, yes, like every marketplace plan. Because they are HMOs, routine and follow-up care is generally covered only inside the plan's Nevada network, which suits contractors who work most shows at home.
Does Nevada tax self-employed income?
Nevada has no personal income tax, so there is no state deduction question for health premiums. The federal self-employed health insurance deduction still applies if you qualify. Businesses can owe other Nevada taxes, so check with a tax preparer.
